Sox May Have An Opportunity To Expand the Lead

The Red Sox have some very favorable match ups the next couple of days.

Andy Sonnanstine (1-8, 6.35 ERA) vs. Daisuke Matsuzaka (13-8, 3.59 ERA)
Ervin Santana (5-11, 6.22 ERA) vs. Josh Beckett (15-5, 3.24 ERA)

And it's just the opposite for the Yankees.

Erik Bedard (12-4, 3.11 ERA) vs. Phil Hughes (2-1, 4.64 ERA)
Justin Verlander (12-4, 3.58 ERA) vs. Mike Mussina (8-7, 4.50 ERA)

If the Red Sox could pick up another couple games, it would be a hard hill for the Yankees to climb. Especially with the Red Sox pitching Daisuke and Beckett at Yankee Stadium later this month.

Great points all. But what happened to Dice-K today? What a golden opportunity get a bigger lead on NY. Ugh.

I didn't think Daisuke pitched particularly badly today, he was just very unlucky. There were a lot of weakly hit balls that found holes. He gave up a few bloop flares between the infielders and outfielders, he wasn't able to barehand the dribbler down the line from Crawford and Pedroia wasn't able to handle the weakly hit chopper that went just over Daisuke's head.

And it looks like Rotoworld agrees. Here's exactly what they said about the outing.

"Matsuzaka, who entered with a 1.26 ERA in two starts versus Tampa Bay, just gave up too many singles today. The Rays had two of the infield variety during their four-run third inning. The Red Sox actually had someone warming up that inning, but Matsuzaka didn't need to come out -- he just needed a little more luck today."

I certainly don't think it's anything to worry about. It was the first time in a month that Daisuke allowed 3 runs in a game.

I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do next Monday on the road against the same team.

And it helps of course that the Red Sox didn't lose any ground because of it.

Gotcha. Thanks. I didn't catch the game today (work) but heard the score on the radio. So this def. helps me see the deal. And yea, the O's came up big for us against Mo of all people.

By the way, I'm a big fan of your stuff from MVN. Glad to see you broke out on your own. Always insightful.

I appreciate it sofla. I was writing independently for quite some time before I went to MVN and to be honest, I enjoy it best. I don't mean any disrespect towards MVN as it was fun to write for them but I think I write best when I don't have required deadlines, lenghts, and post formats.

Just to clarify, it's not like Daisuke doesn't deserve any of the blame for the performance. I'm just saying that his line doesn't reflect how he actually pitched.
